Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary!

Slumber parties are never complete without something a little scary. Sometimes the scary thing involves a Ouija board or a game of "Light as a feather, stiff as a board." Sometimes the scary thing is when someone freezes your underwear. Occasionally, someone suggests trying to summon Bloody Mary.
There are many different versions of the Bloody Mary ritual. In some of them, her name isn't Bloody Mary at all, but Mary Worth, Mary Worthington, or even Kathy. The most popular legend has a murderous Bloody Mary emerging from the mirror in a candlelit room when her name is spoken 13 times in succession. Once she emerges from the mirror, Bloody Mary will claw your eyes out.
Or maybe she'll drive you insane. Or maybe she'll pull you into the mirror and you'll disappear forever. It depends on whom you ask.
So who is Bloody Mary, and why is she so murderous? In some of the stories, Mary is a woman who kills children. In others, she's bitter because she was horribly disfigured in a car accident. Some believe that Bloody Mary refers to Queen Mary I of England. A devout Catholic, Mary I became known as Bloody Mary when she had several Protestants executed in an attempt to reestablish Catholicism in England. She also suffered several miscarriages; some variations of the legend have the chanter saying, "Bloody Mary, I killed your baby," or "I stole your baby." In the Mary Worth variation, the Mary in question was a victim of the Salem witch trials.
As far as what happens to those who decide to light a candle in front of the mirror and invoke one of the Bloody Marys, the accounts vary as widely as the versions of the legend itself.

Bloody Mary was one of those urban legends that I grew up with. I was raised Catholic and my friends were always daring each other to perform the ritual in the mirror with a candle.
Me? I won't even say the name. No sense taking chances!

I remember doing this in my elementary school's washroom. Nothing ever happened, though. Oh the memories...

Cynthia, I remember the same thing. A group of us girls would steal away to the bathroom, turn off the lights and play this.

i though bloody marry was a girl of about 17 and she got sick with a verry contagiious desise. her father was a doctor and pronounced her dead. but she wasnt dead she was in a comma or a deep sleep(i cant remember.) her father new this but he murder his only daughter for the towns sake. that night after the burial, her mother wouldnt leave the grave hoping that the bell (that was tied to her wrist) would ring. her husband convinced her to come inside. the next morning when the went back to the grave, the bell had been rung off the hook. and when they finaly reached her she was dead. and there were scratches on the lid of the coffin and all 10 of her finger nails were wedged in the wood. so thats how she got the name bloody mary and when you somon her you spin around three times and say her name each time you spin. then you will hear a bell ringing and she will apear in the mirror and put you into a comma, then 4 days later she will come back and kill you defencless like she was.

That's the same story I grew up on. Let me tell you I was one of those girls who hit the light switch just in time. I never wanted to find out what would happen, then the one time I didn't hit the light switch I just freaked out for no reason and my mother came to my rescue. Gotta love moms.
