Monday October 29, 2007 8:17 AMPlanning a vacation? Next time you head out, try something a little less prosaic than touring the Grand Canyon or taking a cruise. How about visiting one of the most haunted cities in America instead? Although opinions vary from region to region, here is a short list of some of the most spooktacular places a ghost hunter can put on the vacation list:
New Orleans, LA
Founded in 1718, this beautiful and historic city changed hands from the French to the Spanish and back again, producing a cultural melange that distinguishes the city to this day. A city of magic, mystery and voodoo, New Orleans is a perfect haunted destination. When you stop in, be sure to look up the grave of voodoo queen Marie Lauveau, and check out the new Haunted Mortuary, a paranormal observatory, lab and museum.
Salem, MA
In 1692, witchcraft hysteria struck the small village of Salem, MA, ultimately sending six of its citizens to their deaths. In this modern era, Salem has embraced its witchy history, to the point where even the local police officers sport a Salem-only patch featuring a classic witch astride a broom flying across a yellow moon. When in town, be sure to check out the Witchcraft Museum, but keep in mind that witches aren't the only thing you can find in Salem. You can explore local tales of vampires and hauntings under the guidance of Spellbound Tours.
Savannah, GA
Founded in 1733, Savannah, Georgia claims to be the most haunted city in America per capita. There is no doubt that this seaside city has both atmosphere and charm, with its moss-draped trees and architecture so reminiscent of New Orleans' famous French Quarter. Avid ghost hunters favor Savannah's historic Bonaventure Cemetery and the Pirate's House.
Chicago, IL
Home to the Shedd Aquarium and the famous Field Museum, the Windy City has much to offer an intrepid visitor. But this big-shouldered city has much more than mere cultural appeal. Chicago is also home to a number of famous hauntings, including the legendary Resurrection Mary. Also take some time to check out the haunted nightclub, Excalibur, as well as the eerie cemetery at Bachelor's Grove.
Hollywood, CA
Grauman's Chinese Theatre. The Walk of Fame. The Hollywood Entertainment Museum. There are so many things to do in this city of the silver screen that a diligent traveler might not have room for all the ghosts. But Hollywood has its haunted side, and some of these hauntings are not to be missed. Search for the ghost of Marilyn Monroe at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, and catch the ghost of actor Clifton Webb at the Abbey of the Psalms mausoleum in the
