Shadow People: Nighttime Visitors You Don't Want to See

Tuesday October 23, 2007 8:14 AM

shadow peopleThey're one of the most terrifying paranormal experiences a person can have: Shadow People. Their identity and origin are a mystery. But if you ever see one, you'll never forget it. Shadow People are dark, silhouetted figures that show up unexpectedly and strike fear into the hearts of witnesses. Shadow People are in haunted places, woodlands — and especially inside of homes. In most experiences, the Shadow People are bedroom visitors who shock sleepers.

In a typical encounter, a person wakes up during the night to see what appears to be the silhouette of a tall man wearing a coat or cape and hat. He is standing beside the bed, or in the doorway, or in a corner. The figure is watching the sleeper with great intensity, though no eyes or facial features are visible. The figure is solid, blacker than black, and is capable of blocking light and the view of objects. There is no communication — just an emanation of malevolence and evil. If the witness screams, the figure vanishes suddenly, sometimes into thin air, or by disappearing through a wall or the ceiling. Sometimes it retreats into a closet — or underneath the bed!

People of all ages have Shadow People experiences. Some people have repeated experiences, and sometimes entire families are visited by these mysterious entities. What are they? Ghosts? Demons? People from another dimension? And why do they want to watch people at night?

I've been studying Shadow People for several years, and I have collected hundreds of personal encounters with them. I've examined them from the perspectives of folklore, paranormal phenomena, waking dream images, the Old Hag syndrome, psychological disturbances and sleep disorders.

I believe Shadow People are a paranormal encounter, a visitation by beings from another dimension who are capable of entering our physical reality. They seem to be interested in observing and perhaps monitoring us. Exactly who they are is uncertain, but they may have links to extraterrestrials, who also have a history of monitoring human beings. Though they radiate malevolence, Shadow People rarely act aggressively toward people. Perhaps they instill fear in order to keep people from probing into their nature.

Why do they wear coats and hats? The hats are usually outdated styles. Sometimes their headgear looks more like a helmet. Their appearance may have to do with how they can — or want — to appear. The coat and hat may disguise features about them that would reveal their nature and purpose.

For most experiencers, once is more than enough. Even describing the experience can evoke extreme anxiety and fear. A single visit by a Shadow Person can cause a person to sleep with a light on for years.

Shadow People have been documented in folklore around the world. They seem to have been part of our world for a very long time. Their mission remains unknown.

Wednesday Rome:

Oh my golly! That happened to me once! I'm not sure if any of my friends thought I was truth spitting, but that's hardly the point! It scared the be-jebers out of me!

Jess:

I used to see these all the time even when I was wide awake. There were usually around 1 to 5 of them at a time and when they saw that I was watching them they would dissapear and hide in the rooms of my house. As the years went by they seemed to fade away but then recently, about a couple of months ago I was awakened by one. This one seemed older or darker than any one I had seen before. It was in the middle of the night when I was awakened by this shadowy figure standing in the light coming in from my window. As I tried to get a better look, it moved towards a dark corner in my room and I haven't seen it since. I wish I knew what they were and why they are here.

Here are the 3 types of Shadow people. Yes they are REAL.

Types

Category 1
This category falls into drugs use, seizures, and other mental issues. This category covers a very vast description and is known to have descriptions that may or may not match what others describe in category 2 and 3. Category 1 actually may not be considered shadow people at all due to the non consistancy in the descriptions.

Category 2
This category falls more into the ghost and spirit category. The descriptions in this category are as follows: non human shaped shadows or masses of human shaped shadow people in one place, insect shadows, animal shadow people, and women shadow people. These are mostly see thru shadows. Category 2 shadow people tend to be drawn more to a location than a person. It is common for this category to actually try and not become seen. Light may affect this group.

Category 3
This category does not fall into the ghost or Spirit category. This category has only 2 types of shadow people, One tall shadow man and several small hooded "twin" style shadow people. These are usually seen non see thru however they may be see thru. This category is more drawn to a person rather than a place, this category may actually be drawn to a certain spirit or ghost as well as humans. This category tends to not care about being seen. Light has no effect on this group.

I saw a black hooded figure floating beside my bead when I was around 8 years old. I remember it like it was yesterday.... the image is burned in my memory. Very scary for an 8 year old.

Sandra Storry:

Oh my god....I can't believe this sight is describing the excact thing that used to happen to me when I was a kid...This shadow of a tall man in a black cape with a top hat used to come into my bed room ...he was like a tall shadow on my wall...I always felt I was awake but it was to unbelievable so i would convince myself by morning that i was dreaming...He came a few times...I remember being frightened in bed waiting for him...Sometimes he would come and go more than once in a night...And mine used to talk...He would threaten me...He had a brief case and one night he tol;d me there were 3 chocolate bickies in there and i better not touch them.He then left only to return and bellow at me because one was missing...I have always remember these horrifying experiences but put it down to a repetative dream...or a frequent spooky visitor in my dreams but the way this sight descrobes him is spot on..He used to appear and disappear thru my wall...No wonder I thought I was dreaming...I am keen to learn more about this type of appparician now..

Ken:

Some weird stuff that happened to me past week:

My bed is in front of my walking closet and my dog Alia sleeps always in front of the closet door
sometimes I'm working or watching tv in the bed and she's looking keenly at something inside the closet
doing all the movements as if someone were inside talking to her, from time to time she'll go on her
fours and get inside the closet as if someone had throwed something and she goes to fetch it. My other
dog doesn't do that but she enjoys sleeping inside the closet, Alia tends to just stay on front, she
does the same when I let them out, she'll stay guarding the hallway access to my door or whatever place
I'll be.

Past week I started to have the weirdest dreams, I was trying to find my way on a very dark landscape
full of rare structures that looked geometric ruins, dark shadows moved between them, the only source
of light seemed to be something bright at the edge of the horizon, a very gloomy radiance like the
one before dawn, the creatures would approach me from odd angles, above me, at a side, there was a hooded
one, small ones, but completely black as if were cut with very definitive limits, the would try
to grab me or even touch me, despite I couldn't see eyes I can feel a very strong gaze when they were
right in front of me, when I tried to touch them they would go away or move so I won't be able to do so,
however never feel threatened by them, indeed what I felt was they were being curious about why I was there
in the first place. Of those only the robbed shadow I saw while awake, once behind me in a mirror and the other
it going inside my room.

I went to sleep at a friend's house for a couple of days when I returned the dreams stopped.

I'm quite skeptical but this really got into my nerves since I couldn't explain it and it felt too real.

Sam:

For the past month, i have been awakened by a shadowy figure at the foot of my bed, it appears to be wearing a large coat and hat. It really freaked me out so i stayed at a friend's house, but that didn't help. It followed me there and again i saw it at the foot of the bed. I woke my friend up and asked her if she saw it too. She screamed and started crying, but when she screamed it just came closer to us and it sort of looked like it had red eyes, but very faintly. Her mom came in the room to see if we were ok. She just told her mom she had a bad dream and to turn the light on. We were both very shaken by it, so i decided to researh it and haven't found out much at all. We started calling it "The Man" for some reason. Every night it gets worse and worse. I even see it in my dreams and i'm starting to get scared, and i'm not easily scared at all. My friend can't sleep without the lights on and probably won't get over that anytime soon. When i first told her about it she didn't believe me.

Pam:

I have encounters like this once a month or so. It started when I was in college, I moved into this really old house just off of campus. At first it would just look like a man was standing at the foot of my bed, but I couldnt see any features. Then it started getting more clear, I would see women sometimes too. Except I could feel myself half asleep/half awake, I have to fight to wake myself up so that they go away. These figures come to by bedside and touch me, I can feel them rocking me back and forth and I fight to wake myself up so they will leave me alone. Sometimes its so bad I have to jolt awake and sleep with my TV on, this stops them from coming. But the people are not black figures anymore, I can see their faces. I can explain to someone the next day what they look like. Its really strange, but there was one time that the person was a midget, I could even feel that his hands were smaller than normal. These encounters scare the crap out of me. No matter where I live, they show up. This mostly doesnt happen to me if someone is in bed with me, or if I am at someone else's house. Its weird because I dont feel like they are trying to hurt me, but it disturbs my sleep and makes my heart race. My friends think it has something to do with the house I lived in, that the spirits in that house follow me because they can connect with me. I just want it to stop so I can sleep!

Josh:

I had gotten an 8 ball of coke the other night and I have been awake for the last 2 days, lol.. And I see tons of shadow people right now. I hadn't did coke in awhile and I forgot that it happen's more so when ur on something. So anyhow, I was terrified last night thiknking someone was in my house, I heard noise's and what I thoght was people darting in and out of the rooms. That went on for about an hour. LMAO, and I pulled myself together, remembering about the good ol shadow ppl. They don't scare me anymore, I used to see them when i was younger before i got into dabbling in drugs. I think when we do drugs, it brings us closer to them, allows our minds to open up and see them. They're not scary i have seen them fr so many years, that it is almost beleve it or not comforting. My partner works away 2 weeks at a time, so it gets lonely here with just the dog, she's not much of a conversationalist, when I am high or not, lol.. But anyhow, my dog was very whiny last night when i was seeing them, and she is still that way. Does she see them too? I am going to a psychic on monday, I am excited, I am going to ask him about them. I also died 8 years ago, and was obviously brought back, I wonder if those types of experiences, allow you further communication??? hmmmm.. I see stuff all the time.

jeff:

Good article, I experienced the hat man when i was younger 1 time, it was very clear. I wasnt intimidated or scared, i just keep thinking 'what is that thing??'. He DID communicate with me with the use of his hands/arms and head. He would look to the side, look at me, then to the side again for about 3 times. Then he would put out his arms to the side and pull them into his body and look at me like he was trying to tell me something. I want to know what that means in sign language perhaps?? I have no idea what he was trying to tell me, but it was very clear.

Shelly:

This happened to me only once, a couple years ago. It was indeed a very tall man with a hat and trenchcoat, and he was standing right beside me while I was lying in bed. When I saw him, he ran around the foot of the bed and through my closed window on the other side of me. He moved so quickly I could barely see him.

I was frightened for a few seconds, but calmed because I kind of recognized him. Has that ever happened to anyone before?? I kind of wish he would come back.

jay:

Only seen a shadow man once when i was 11 years old. i woke up and i was completely refreshed till i seen a man standin in my doorway it walked in a straight line down to my bedside. i thought it was my dad n called out dad several times but it didnt answer it just came closer. i then jumped up and ran into my parents room it followed me in there and slowly walked towards me. my mom turned on her bedside lamp and it vanished. i asked my mom where my dad was and she said he was working late and might not be home till tomorrow. obviously my mom didnt believe what i had seen and told me to go to bed. i went to the living room turned on all the lights and the tv and layed down on the couch. but when i layed down on the couch i felt a painfull pinch on my back like someone grabbed my back with there entire hand and squeezed. i jumped up got a drink and stayed standing up the rest of the night. havent seen one since and i pray i never ever do kuzz that was tha scariest shit that ever happened to me

sharon:

Until today, I had never heard of shodow people. About 2 weeks ago, I was taking pictures outside of my daughter as she was walking away from our house. I took 5 frames. The next morning, i downloaded them and as we looked at them, i noticed in the forth frame, a dark image, kinda looks like a kite in the distance. I zoomed in completly on the object and I got shivers. You can make out a mans form, black, hooded and hovering just above the telephone pole. Looks like the arms extended out and looking right at my daughter. The fifth frame, the object is gone, but just to the left of were it had been, you can make out a thick black cloud. My daughter knows nothing about what I have seen in her picture, but since then, she has been waken during the night on 3 differnt occations, saying there was someone staring at here while she was in bed. I am looking for what ever kind of avice I can get, i am so spooked about this. I can send anyone interested copies of the pictures, any kind of advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Sharon

john:

i am very interested when visting this site. i thought i was the only person who had these kinds of dreams, but come to find several with my experience. i hae had 3 encouters with these "shadow people" the first visit was when i was 15 year of age, i was alone and my mother was off for work in another state, it was the weekend dark and bed time for me. i saw what appeared to be a man with an udertaker looking black hat and wearing a trench coat of some sort. i could not make out is face, he was reaching for me i could not say a word as he reached for me even though i was terrified. the next dream i had i was around 25 and now in my own place of residency, this man showed again only this time he actually placed his hands on my chest, again i could not say a word and i was again terrified of the encounter. i am now 31 and in iraq right now and stationed in the middle of now where. i had the same dream with the same man, this time he called for me by name, reached for me, and grabbed me by my chest. i again could not say a word. i fought my inability to move and reached for this being. grabbing him by his neck, he vanished!!!! i could not help but thnking this whole time what would my troops think if they saw me reaching for something that probably wasn't there? but i then noticed that i was still lying there. all i could remember is that i was again terrified of this being but this time i was able to counter it. i guess we shall see what happens next?

Julie:

It was extremely warm in my room one night, so I got up and opened my bedroom window 2-3". I live in an apartment on the 4th floor and the cold breeze felt better. I was sleeping on my right side and approximately 3:00 am I opened my eyes and I saw a solid black silhouette of a man wearing a hat standing next to the side of my bed facing me. I tried to call out to my sons, but I could not speak or move. Apparently I was experiencing sleep paralysis where my mind was out of the REM stage but my body was still in the sleep stage. I sensed a negative feeling and closed my eyes and prayed. As soon as I prayed for protection I woke up completely. I got up and looked around the room and nothing was there. The next day I told my son about it and thought it was a strange dream. A week later, my son was listening to Coast-to-Coast AM and a caller was telling George Noory about a shadow person. George asked if it was wearing a hat? When I heard this I thought my son was joking. I started researching the internet and I found drawings just like the silhouette I saw in my room and got goose bumps from my head to my toes. When I go to bed each night, I'm now afraid that when I open my eyes I might see this thing again. I'm 45 years old and I've never been afraid, until now. I'm also wondering if having my window open that night might have something to do with what I saw. I will never forget this experience, ever! (Madison, Wisconsin. May 2008)

J:

This event happened to me about fourteen years ago. It was during the summer and was a very warm night. I was tossing and turning for several hours and just couldn't sleep. Usually I slept with my bedroom door open, but that night I had closed it. Well, after laying there in a futile attempt to sleep I happened to look over towards my door. It immediately struck me that there was a shadow by the closed door where there shouldn't be a shadow. Well, in a flash then the shadow moved by my bed. Looking at it it had the appearance of being in a hooded robe with two eyes that allowed the wall behind the figure to be seen (kind of like looking at a cardboard cutout). At soon as it occurred to me that it was actually standing right there,(it moved in a really spastic pattern, with really jerky movements) it held its right arm up to its left shoulder allowing the sleeve to slide up its arm (the arm was very thin and the hand had very long tapered fingers). It then back handed me to the right side of my face sending me sprawling into my bedside table. When I stood up, I grabbed the lamp that had fallen from the table and turned it on. Nothing was there. My family never believed me and still think I lied.

Finn:

When I was 21 years old I saw this same guy standing in my doorway. I was asleep, and just sort of woke up for no reason, and there he was. He had longish, frizzy hair, and stood about 6'5". He took up most of my doorway. I could see his silhouette, because of the light shining in from the hallway around my door frame. Which was strange to me at the time, because I always slept with my door closed, so how was there so much light shining through, I thought to myself. I was groggy, but I noticed his hair, and for a very brief moment I thought it was my girlfriend at the time. As soon as I said her name, I realized that, not only was it not her, but that some menacing figure was in my room, looking at me, and that he was there to do me serious harm. As I was realizing this, he advaned on me like someone had thrown a dark heavy blanket on me. That's when I woke up, jumped out of bed, turned on my light, and danced around my room saying, "Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Oh, my God". The whole time it was happening (a moment really) I thought I was awake. I was more terrified by this than any nightmare I had ever been as a kid. So, two hours later (lord knows how I managed this), I turned out the light and went to sleep. Then I woke up, and he was standing at the head of my bed looking down at me. As soon as I recognized his presence, this f**cker knelt down on one knee, and put his "face" right down next to mine. I freaked out and woke up, again. This time the light stayed on, and I chained smoked until dawn. Turns out this dude visited two other people on my street just months before he visited me. They won't even talk about it, it freaked them out so much. Where else can I read about this occurance? I would love to understand this thing.

Hugo:

I was a Shadow Person.
Allow me to explain. My ex-girlfriend was an avid listener of the Coast to Coast radio program. Shadow People are a recurring theme on the program, as several readers here are surely aware. Jenny had often spoken of them; it seemed to be her favorite topic on the program, as she had no interest in the usual assortment of kooks, true believers, and theoretical physicists that populate the guest list.
One night, I decided to have a little fun at her expense, playing upon her fascination with these so-called Shadow People. I wasn't sleeping there that evening, but around 2 AM, I quietly let myself in. I wore a dark peacoat with the collar up, and had a wool cap pulled down over my head. Staying still after entering her apartment until I was sure she hadn't awakened, I tiptoed to her bedroom door. I had to keep myself from giggling, and nearly decided to abort my little plan, but grasped the doorknob and turned it slowly, still not quite sure what to do next. Should I make a small sound, just enough to get her to roll over and semi-open her eyes? Should I just stand there, hovering over her, waiting for her to "sense" my presence in the room?
I gently pushed open the door while pondering these possibilities. My eyes fell on Jenny, as a sliver of dim light barely illuminated the side of her face as she lay there in bed, still asleep. Seeing her brought a wave of misgiving over me, and I abruptly decided that I couldn't go through with it. I began to pull the door shut, when I noticed it.
Standing at the foot of her bed, looking down at her, was what appeared to be...me.

Joseph:

Well I would like to meet some of you folks to see if what we do in our lives, or if there are any similarities in us!

I was 34 yrs old when I had 3 experiences over 4 nights. With out going into much detail when I awoke in my bed EVERYTHING in my room was as it should be including the night light in my sons room adjacent to ours! Seemed like something was going on but nothing to weird except the draw strings on my window shades was moving back and forth like it had been recently used... I fell back asleep!

The next night Things got way crazier! I had a dream about what was an apocalyptic scene and many people were making their way through a Large city that was devastated by some calamity, and through out that dream I kept seeing a TALL man with a pleasant but somber look on his face standing off in the shadows! He seemed to have wings on his back but they were hard to make out!

Later that night I awoke and again EVERYTHING was as it should be in my room, Only my window blinds were open and the strings were moving again, There was a figure at the base of my bed, and I remember asking whose there but fell back asleep!

Now the grand finale... 2 nights later the same things occurred and this time I think I awoke, and there he was, A very tall man with long features! He was at the foot of my bed and was saying things to me. I felt as if I could not move and My wife was in the other room and said she heard me talking at someone and kind of thought it was weird but didn’t come right in! she figured I was dreaming!

What I saw was with out a doubt a Man in what looked like a colonial style suit and top hat with a trench coat or formal wear! Now here is the thing that was a little different.

There were OTHERS there! I remember clearly as time went on that there were 3-4 short impish hairy creatures standing behind him and randomly looking out at me! Like they were bobbing their heads out 1-2 at a time!

They were short and stalky and their eyes were very beady! My wife finally came in the room and woke me up and said I was fighting with someone and I was VERY enraged!

I haven’t ever done it before, and aside from some Loud snoring, Saying a couple girls’ names in my sleep and some occasional gastronomical events... My wife hasn’t seen that before or since!

That’s my story and I’m stuck on it!

Thanks all!

Sean:

There was a brief period of time my family lived with my grandmother in her home. One night, my little brother, who was 3, maybe 4 years old at the time, burst out of his room screaming at the top of his lungs and ran into my parents room. He said that a "black, shadowy man" had been in the corner of his room, growled at him, then floated up to and through the ceiling. He was terrified and refused to sleep in that room after this occurrence. This was the only time he encountered this "shadow man". He did and still does swear that it really happened, and even though I was skeptical, I belied him, as well as my mother and sister.

This had also been the house my mother had grown up in. She had told me of two paranormal events that had happened to her at and around this house while growing up. The first happened when she and some friends were playing with an oija board in a room by themselves. They were talking with something when they all hear a voice. She told me what it said but I don't remember at the moment. They were all freaked out and ran to her parents and asked if it was them who said something, which it had not been. The second event happened to her in my grandmothers home. She says that she woke up to see a creepy hand reach out from under the bed and pinch her big toe. Hearing this from my mother helped quell my skepticism.

I recently started researching the occurrence of a black shadowy figure and was surprised to see so many similar accounts. I was even more surprised to read about a tall dark man in a top hat and, usually, cloak or trench coat. The reason that this surprised me was due to an experience I had at the very same house my mother and brother had their brush with the paranormal. When I was about 10, I was visiting my grandmother but came down with a bad fever. I was really sick and in bed for a couple of days and attributed what I am about to tell you to a fever dream, even though I could not shake the feeling that it had been a real experience, even now. I remember seeing a very tall, lanky man wearing a top hat and colonial garb at the foot of the couch that I was resting on. I saw his face which was very gaunt and pale. His limbs were disproportionately long. Next to me, there were 2 dogs racing around on the floor. The man in the top hat then sat in a squatting position either at the end of the couch or to the side. He seemed to be able to change his position instantly, at will. He sat there and talked and we drank tea together of all things. I almost felt like he approved of me or something. The whole experience seemed real but, like I said, I attributed the real sensation to a fever dream; until I discovered that many, many people have claimed to be visited by a tall, thin, shadowy man in a top hat. This has me thinking and my curiosity on the subject has definitely been perked.

Becca:

Hi I'm Becca. I've been studying shadow men and night whisperers which are much alike and may even have the same roots. However the night whisperers are less heard of and frankly dangerous. Shadow people have to my knowledge never done any physical harm. They will if they feel threatened chase and dance around to scare those in contact with them. For those that are currently afraid of the contact that shadow men are having with your children. Or any of you that saw them as children and wonder why you haven't seen them sense. To my understanding they gravitate most commonly to the young because they are less threatening. They stare a almost boring stare at you. You will most likely feel intruded emotionally. I'm not exactly sure why they target young people the most commonly but if your children complain of the shadows blacking out there ceiling and all light and hear whispers or see long out stretched shadowy hands on the ceiling these creatures are more violent than those that stare. Those to my knowledge are the only ones to be truely fearful of.

Megan:

I have experience the dark shadow figure for years now. I figured that it would leave when I left my parents house but it followed me. Its a tall, dark human figure that wear an old western hat, and a long coat. He never speaks to me or answers me. He usually comes into the dream when something else bad is happening to me. and this figure just stands there and watches it happen to me. And when I reach out for the figure its makes a screaming noise and disappears. And every time I talk about this thing I always get an eerie feeling and my hair stands up on my arms

joseph:

It was 2004 july 4.The place was tablerock lake, just outside Branson Mo.My friend Gerald his kid,and I.We were at the lake to shoot off ileagal fireworks. We had our fun,his kid went to sleep in the tent.He in his hammock,me in the van.Only it was very uncomfertable,so I didnt sleep. We had a boat tide to shore.Through the firelight I noticed shadows almost forming around it. I started studying the shadows all around. They were all moving, and I was freaking out.I just could not beleive my eyes.I krept from the van and away from the fire,to let my eyes adjust to the darkness.I stood in those dark woods all night, watching them things;watching my friend.I watched them looking into the open tent at his kid.I watched them repeling down from the trees and walking up out of the water.I could see them perfectly well when they where between me and the fire.the ones in the water had somekind of breathing apperatus, though no tanks.I quitly walked to the trees from were I had seen some come, and reached out to their rope.It became a snake in an instant,no I am not crazy;nore was I on anything. They stayed in groups of three,or more. They wore helmets with twigs tucked in them. They deploid like military around the camp.I could also hear them move, but they were very carefull. As day came they "desolved"into the woods again. They are not spirits, nor from another plain. They are real and here among us.I watch them always, but keep my mouth shut.Ive told a few friends, and watched the eyes roll.So I now tell noone. If you want to see for yourself, just get some place that will be dark, with light in front of you at a distance;be quit and wait for night.I bet after that your a believer. good luck.

Joni:

One night I was awakened by a dark shadowy figure standing next to my bedside about one to two feet away from me. It was about 6 ft. tall or so and was staring down at me intensely, striking fear in my heart. My first impulse was to think maybe I am dreaming, so I sat up and leaned toward it to focus more clearly. I could see my bedroom furniture and my room in the background and I knew it was real. Just then I screamed and it vanished quickly into thin air. It was wearing a safari or trench coat with a safari hat. I could make out no features, just a tall lanky dark sillhouette with long arms. I remember once before having this experience, but I wrote it off as a dream. This time I was sure it was not as I remember waking up from a dream just before it appeared. When I searched the internet, I was shocked to find other people have witnessed this episode also.
