To Orb or Not to Orb

Monday September 24, 2007 8:46 AM

orb_michelle.jpgOrb photos. They are trotted out on nearly every paranormal site as proof that ghosts exist. These mostly transluscent spheres of light appear singly or in swarms, and according the some paranormal investigators, each orb is photographic evidence of the presence of a ghost.

Where ghost hunters are concerned, orbs are like a religion. There are those who fervently believe that every single orb in a photo is actually a ghost, smiling pretty for the camera. On the other side are the disbelievers, and they are just as staunch. The disbelievers argue that orbs are nothing but motes in the camera's eye, flecks of moisture or bits of dust.

And yet, of all the thousands of orb photos that get posted on ghost hunting sites across the Internet, there remain those one or two compelling images: orbs that seem very three dimensional. Orbs that glow with a strangely colored light. Orbs that move in reference to the other figures in the image.

What are orbs, really? Do we all just become floating balls of light once we move to the Great Beyond? As interesting as that concept may be, it seems unlikely that, in photos literally speckled with orbs, each individual dot is the visible representation of a sentient spirit-being. On the other hand, at least in a rare few photos, it's hard to deny that the sphere of light is something other than just a fleck of dust or moisture. There's probably no good answer to the debate, and perhaps that's what draws us to the topic, over and over again. Orbs represent that special brand of compelling almost-evidence that drives the continued search for proof. Because orb photos can be argued and dismissed, they keep paranormal investigators searching for that one perfect experience: the image of irrefutable proof captured on film that will make the world see — and believe.

Ok. I am one of those that believe orbs in photos or video cameras are 99.9% of the time dust or an insect. However, I am trying to find info about a different type of orb. As a child (my guess is that I was about 8,) my brother and I were both outdoors playing when we were "visited" by either two or three, I can't remember, 3-D spheres of light. They were balls of light that would change colors as if they were twinkling stars. They were about the size of ping pong balls. It was in the summer, in daylight. We watched them for several minutes, maybe five or so. We didn't speak other than an initial "ooh what is that?" The spheres floated and danced and zipped around near us. Moving in close and then moving as far as 6 or so feet away. As they moved, they frequently changed their speed from slow/hovering to fast. They stayed together as a group. They appeared to be interacting with us. I felt as if they were trying to communicate to us. I had a feeling of joy when this was going on. The spheres came quite close, maybe within 2 feet of us. We first saw them when we were standing on the edge of the carport. They interacted with us there, then they "lead" us out into the yard. Dancing about and flickering pretty colors. Towards the end of the encounter, the spheres moved higher and seemed to play a little bit as they moved among the branches of our pin oak tree. After about 20 seconds in the tree, the orbs moved up higher and at medium speed, continued skyward until we could no longer see them. I felt almost sad when they went away. We were stunned and have mentioned it to each other once in a while over the years. I want to know if anyone else has had such an experience.

I've tried many times to get some kind of feedback on this photo. It's so interesting to me because the sky was clear when I shot this picture. A solid white ball flying through the photo at an angle, with a motion trail behind it. Other orbs are in the background in different sizes and distances.
I was standing under the edge of the turtle pointing the camera upwards. The King Neptune statue sits on the very edge of the boardwalk and is about 22 feet high. I backed up to take another photo of the whole statue but my batteries had died. We returned to our room and tried the camera again on the balcony and it worked fine. In the balcony photos, we clearly have a few orbs (semi solid) floating beside us, 8 floors up in a night sky.
In another photo taken on a Ghostwalk in Fredericksburg, VA., I have a photo taken in an old cemetary where there are 3 prominent headstones that are side by side with others surrounding them. Above each of those sits an orb right in the center. It's another interesting photo to see. I believe I am sensitive with my digital camera when photographing. I have many photos with them in all kinds of circumstances. It would be great to have a place for us to post them and receive feedback.

The photo didnt show up. Try the URL - it goes to photobucket - http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa285/amp1101/Orbs/KingNeptunesmaller.jpg

Well, I am one who questions orbs. I don't say they are paranormal or not. What I do say is that they can be many things.

I have developed a device that may help in determining what they are. I have come up with an idea for a device with several cameras that takes several of the same photos at the same time with & without flash. Now, if the orbs are physical like dust or moisture they will reflect light back to the camera but will not be exactly the same on each camera because of the slight differences in camera angle. However, if they are a true paranormal orb with it's own source of energy it should show up on all the photos exactly the same. If they do then there is good cause for further investigation.
